A press release issued by Randy Keller states that a DNA report confirms the deceased as 31-year-old Eric Ashby, of Colorado Springs, who was reported missing June 28, 2017.
Eric was believed to have drowned, and numerous searches were conducted after he went missing.
Randy Keller said after the autopsy August 1, 2017, in El Paso County, DNA samples from the unidentified deceased and Eric’s father were sent to the Colorado Bureau of investigation for comparison.
After Eric reportedly fell off a raft and into the Arkansas River in June, his disappearance led to speculation about his search for hidden treasure and why the three people who were apparently with him didn’t call for help.
The accident was reported to authorities by a bystander who was in the area and apparently happened when Ashby was searching with a group of people for author Forrest Fenn’s “Thrill of the Chase” treasure, which has claimed the lives of more than one Coloradan.

Eric’s family reported him missing on June 28, 2017.
Eric reportedly went missing while rafting the Arkansas River in Royal Gorge on June 28, 2017. Multiple people went into the river and all but one of them made it to shore. Sheriff’s deputies were told Eric was not wearing a life vest or helmet at the time of the accident
Eric’s sister received information that he was on the hunt for Forest Fenn’s treasure. For a long time he had been in pursuit of finding it and the general consensus seems to be that is what he was doing this day. He believed he figured out where the treasure was.
Crews including, sheriff’s deputies, Canon City Fire Department, Fremont Search and Rescue Swift Water rescue team, Colorado Parks officers searched by helicopter and along the river from the scene of the reported accident downstream to the Pink House recreation site until dark, but found nothing. No other calls were received about a rafting accident or a missing person.
